The meteor flag of England
Shall yet terrific burn,
Till danger's troubled night depart,
And the star of peace return.
Th' imperial ensign, which full high advanc'd
Shone like a meteor, streaming to the wind.
An harmless flaming meteor shone for hair,
And fell adown his shoulders with loose care.
Oh why should the spirit of mortal be proud?
Like a fast-flitting meteor, a fast-flying cloud,
A flash of the lightning, a break of the wave,
He passes from life to his rest in the grave.
Misled by fancy's meteor ray,
By passion driven;
But yet the light that led astray
Was light from heaven.
Loose his beard, and hoary hair
Stream'd like a meteor to the troubled air.
Th' imperial ensign, which full high advanc'd
Shone like a meteor, streaming to the wind.
